Filerimos

(approximately 3 hours)

A hill of 1000 feet high and 15km southwestern of the city of Rhodes is Filerimos. An oasis so close to the capital, that hides so many beauties. During it's hole history Filerimos was a holy place for the inhabitants of the area and one of the most important fortresses.

The Acropolis of the ancient city of Ialysos was build at the plateau of this hill. The ruins of the temple of Athena are still there. During the centuries the Early Christian Basilica, with it's Baptistery, the Monastery of the Knights of S. John the Baptist were constructed. Renovated at the beginning of the 20th century the church is still in use.

At the same hill we can also see the "Street of the Martyrs of Jesus". A very beautiful path, that was created at the beginning of the 20th century. All along the path there are shrines, that represent the Passions of Jesus. At the end there is a cross standing, symbolizing the Crucifixion. The view from up there is outstanding. An amazing hill, full of life and spiritual energy, since many peacocks and wild birds live there.

A part of the island, that everybody has to visit!
